CHOPOK SOUTH - CAVES

Beauty of the cave underground world traditionally attracts thousands of visitors from Slovakia and abroad every year. Unique shapes of multicolor stalactic decorations, fragile beauty, solid stalagmitic and ice shapes, this all documents the vast force of the nature.

On southern side of Low Tatras, in Ďumbiersky carst , part of carst massif Kozie chrbty there is situated the third longest and the fourth deepest cave of Slovakia.

JASKYŇA MŔTVYCH NETOPIEROV (The Dead Bats Cave) is the sole Slovak high-mountain cave opened for public. Diameters of cave, length 16,2 km is not finisched yet, depht of cave 300 m. , maximum temperature 3,6 °C. Cave has in its interior a lot of corridors in 14 floors, known till now, and in two parallel branches. The largest underground space the "Bystrica cathedral"- is situated on the 7th floor, -180 m deep and its volumen achieves up to 52500 m3.

The cave is accessible from the southern part from Trangoška. It is about one hour via mountain-path up to the chalet under "Ďumbier" (1 740 m a.s.l.). Another route goes from "Srdiečko" by cableway to the Intermediate station "Kosodrevina" or up to the "Chopok" (2 024 m a.s.l.). From there, the touristic path goes again to the "M. R. Štefánik chalet" under "Ďumbier". The same possibility to get there is from "Jasná" again by cableway up to "Chopok" and from there to the chalet.

Footpaths in cave:
Footpath A length 1 km, duration 1-2 hours ,with lighting, safeguarded with steel ropes and bridges. Ppossible also for children from 6 years
Footpaths B and C length 3 km and more, without lighting, difficult speleologic tracking with scrambling, not for children.
